BARCELONA – Senior Devin Mitchell scored 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, as Georgia State earned a 106-95 win over the Mataro All Stars on Sunday night.
Two days ago Mitchell knocked down eight 3-pointers in Georgia State’s first game of the trip.
This was the second of what was supposed to be a three-game trip for the Panthers. However, as a major heatwave is currently hitting Europe, temperatures in the non-air conditioned gym tonight went well over 90 degrees. Monday’s final game will not be played as it is expected to once again be over 100 degrees in Barcelona tomorrow and the game was to be played in the same gym.
Georgia State got off to a quick start and took an 8-0 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Thomas and Mitchell.
Mataro fought back to tie the score 22-22 after the first quarter.
“I thought we got off to a much better start tonight in extremely difficult conditions,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “We played a lot of guys and used those tough conditions to hopefully make us better long term. I thought our seniors played well which is exactly what I want to see out of them.”
The Panthers opened the second quarter with another 8-0 run to take a 29-22 lead with 8:59 to play. Georgia State led by nine with 3:53 to play and went into the locker room leading 54-47.
Georgia State led 80-69 after three quarters and would win by that margin after each team scored 26 points in the fourth.
Sophomore Kane Williams added 15 points, going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. After struggling from the line in the opener, the Panthers finished 11-of-13 on Sunday night, while knocking down 15 3-pointers.
Corey Allen chipped in 11 points, while senior Jordan Tyson added 10.
The Mataro All Stars finished with four players in double figures.
Georgia State has multiple tours and excursions scheduled for the next two days before flying home on Wednesday.
Supporters will be able to follow Georgia State on his trip to Spain with planned blog updates, video highlights and social media posts throughout the trip.
