ATLANTA – Georgia State women’s soccer opens Sun Belt play with home matches against in-state rival Georgia Southern Friday night and defending conference champion South Alabama Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. Friday’s match will be the first of the 2018-19 Georgia State-Georgia Southern Rivalry Series, with the winner accumulating one point toward the series.
GSU (2-5-1) turns its attention from back-to-back losses against SEC opponents in Georgia and Vanderbilt to in-state rival Georgia Southern, a team the Panthers have beaten or drawn with in 14 of the last 15 matches. Georgia State enters Friday’s contest ranked third in the Sun Belt in both total shots with 85 and total corner kicks with 30.
Junior midfielder Brooke Shank leads the team in goals scored (3), total points (6), total shots (17) and shots on goal (8). Her two goals against Mercer are tied for the most goals in a single match by a Sun Belt player this season.
Georgia Southern (2-5-0) returns to the pitch after falling 1-0 at Kennesaw State on Friday. The Eagles enter Friday ranked fifth in the conference in goals allowed with 11 and haven’t conceded more than one goal in their last three matches.
South Alabama (2-5-0) aims to snap its five-game losing streak with a victory at Georgia State after Friday’s originally scheduled match at Appalachian State was postponed due to Hurricane Florence. The Jaguars head into the weekend ranked third in the Sun Belt in total goals with nine and second in total corner kicks with 31. Preseason Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Hannah Godfrey is tied for first on the team in goals scored with two.
Friday will be the 23rd meeting between the two programs, with Georgia State holding a 13-6-3 advantage in the all-time series. In the most recent outing between the two, the Panthers and Eagles tied 2-2 in 2017.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at the GSU Soccer Complex. Fans can watch the game live on Georgia State’s official audio and video service PantherVision or follow along via live stats at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
