ATLANTA- Fresh off Tuesday’s home Day of Duals, Georgia State beach volleyball (9-5) will head to the Palmetto State for four duals over two days at the Gamecock Grand Slam. GSU will face Eastern Kentucky and South Carolina on Saturday, and conclude the tournament with battles against Stetson and UAB on Sunday.

The Sandy Panthers will be a part of history Saturday morning, as they are set to be the first ever opponent for Eastern Kentucky beach volleyball. EKU added the program prior to the 2019 season, and the Colonels will make their debut Saturday in Columbia.

“We get to play Eastern Kentucky in their first dual ever on Saturday,” said Beth Val Fleet. “This will be the 2nd first year program we have played this season it is incredible to see the growth of our sport firsthand and we are excited to welcome EKU to the beach community and see them in competition.”

Georgia State will be looking for revenge on Sunday in a 9:00 a.m. matchup with Stetson. The Hatters handed GSU a 5-0 loss in the 2019 season opener on February 22 in Deland. The Panthers will wrap up play in Columbia battling CCSA rival, UAB.

“We are excited for all four duals this weekend for a variety of reasons,” Van Fleet said. “We look forward to continuing CCSA play facing South Carolina and UAB. Both teams are playing well and with determination. Stetson has just come back from a successful trip to California and we are excited for that rematch.”

Through 14 matches the Sandy Panthers are 9-5 in dual play and 44-26 in individual matches. GSU has seen consistent production from Eden Hawes and Georgia Johnson, carrying a 10-4 record in the one flight. State is also 10-4 in flight three, with seven of those wins coming from Brooke Weiner and Kate Novack. Becky Tresham and Maddie Gordon have been solid for coach Van Fleet’s squad, winning five straight and seven of their last eight matches.
