ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball returns to action this weekend as the team travels from the mountains to the beach for a pair of matches in the Carolinas. The Panthers begin the weekend taking on Appalachian State in Boone at 6:30 p.m. Friday night. The team then gets a rare day off in conference play before battling Coastal Carolina in Conway on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
“The nice thing about the day in between matches is that you have an extra day to spend on scout, and fine tune the things we need to work on”, said coach Sally Polhamus. “Usually we are spending three to five hours traveling after the match and get very little time to reassess ourselves. It allows us to really break down our play from the night before and be ready for Coastal.”
The Panthers are looking to improve upon a 1-3 record in conference play. Appalachian State (1-3), and Coastal Carolina (3-1), are both Sun Belt East rivals. Last season, GSU swept a two-match series with App State that included a 3-2 win in Boone. The Panthers fell 3-0 in Conway last November.
Throughout the season GSU has generated a good deal of the offense from the service line. The Panthers are averaging 1.58 aces per set, which is good for first in the Sun Belt. Crystal Lee continues to lead the conference with .44 aces per set. Carley Eiken and Anna Rantala also rank in the Sun Belt’s top ten.
