NEW ORLEANS - Jada Lewis and Madison Newby of the GSU women’s basketball team were named to the preseason All-Sun Belt team, the conference announced Thursday.

Lewis, a sophomore, was last season’s Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after leading GSU in scoring at 13.2 points per game in conference play. Lewis averaged 11.6 points per game on the season as a whole and led the Panthers in assists with 1.9 per game. She was an excellent shooter last season, sinking 80% of her free throws, 38% of her 3-point attempts and 41% of her field goal attempts.

Newby sustained an injury after the third game of the season and took a medical redshirt after missing the remainder of the year. As a freshman during the 2015-16 season, she led the league in assists (145, 5.0 per game) and rank No. 48 in the NCAA. Newby had a Sun Belt season-best 14 assists vs. Troy to tie for second-most in GSU history for a game. She was recognized as the 2015-16 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year.

Georgia State opens the season Nov. 11 at Florida and will play its first home game Nov. 24 against VCU in the Sports Arena.
