ATLANTA--Backed by eight shutouts, the Georgia State men's soccer team looks to build off a solid defensive effort this spring as it looks forward to the 2012 fall season.

The Panthers went 4-2-5 during the spring exhibition season and outscored opponents 9-4. GSU utilized the spring season to work in a plethora of young talent into its rotation that second-year head coach Brett Surrency has brought in during his brief but successful tenure.

"We were very happy to give a lot of our younger guys some important minutes this spring," Surrency said, "We felt like they gained valuable game experience this spring."

Georgia State posted a notable 1-1 tie vs. UAB in its spring opener on Mar. 10. Junior Gimel Gordon scored a game-tying goal in the second half on an assist from classmate Yasser Majluf. The Panthers and Blazers battled to an identical score this spring after posting a 1-1 tie last fall. UAB was the No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to eventual national runner-up Charlotte 3-1 in the second round.

Georgia State posted a 0-0 tie vs. the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League on Mar. 24. Redshirt freshman CJ Cochran was in net for the Panthers against the Silverbacks. The Panthers then went undefeated at the Metro Atlanta Cup the following weekend against Clayton State, Emory, Oglethorpe and Southern Poly. GSU wrapped up its spring slate with a 2-0 win vs. Brewton Parker in Statesboro, Ga.

Surrency and the Panthers return to action in August with the beginning of preseason training. Georgia State went 13-8-1 last season on the way to earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. GSU returns nine starters from the team that took the field in an opening-round loss at No. 24 Duke in last year's tournament.

"With the majority of last fall's team returning and the addition of the incoming players we expect competition for spots on the field to be ultra high," Surrency said, "We are anticipating another exciting year in the fall and can't wait to get back on the field in August."
