ATLANTA - Five members of the Georgia State men's basketball team were honored earlier this week for their work in the classroom during the spring semester. Two members of the team earned Dean's List honors, while a trio of Panthers earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll distinctions.
Redshirt-senior Jihad Ali and freshman Justin Green each earned Dean's List honors with GPA's of 3.5 or higher. Ali, who is currently working toward a masters in sports administration, earned CAA All-Academic honors earlier this year and won the CAA Dean Ehlers Leadership Award recipient, the top honor given to a men's basketball player in the conference each year.
Green, playing in just his first season at Georgia State, saw action in six games for the Panthers during the 2001-12 season.
Fields, a two-time All-CAA Academic Team member, finished his career with his most successful season and graduated this spring. He is one of 15 Panthers to graduate in the last five years.
Taylor, who graduated in the fall, is currently working on his graduate studies, while Gamble, in his first season, saw action in 12 games off the bench for first-year head coach Ron Hunter.
Overall, Georgia State student-athletes maintained a combined cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 for the eighth consecutive semester, and 158 Panthers earned academic honors.
The GSU student-athlete population posted a semester GPA of 2.94 for the spring, including nine teams over 3.0, putting the Panthers' cumulative GPA at 3.03.
An all-time high 31 student-athletes earned Georgia State's highest academic distinction by making the President's List, signifying a semester GPA of 4.0 or higher with at least nine credit hours.
Combined with 17 honorees last fall, Georgia State boasts 48 student-athletes on the President's List during the 2011-12 year.
Another 52 student-athletes earned Dean's List recognition for the spring, signifying a semester GPA of at least 3.5, and an additional 75 Panthers were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a semester GPA of at least 3.2. All individuals earning academic honors are listed below.
