Johns Creek, Ga.--The Georgia State men's tennis team secured its first conference triumph of the season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Old Dominion at The Standard Club on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia State (2-0), ranked No. 65 in the nation, took the doubles point and notched five singles victories against Old Dominion (0-1). The Panthers have now won three straight matches against the conference rival Monarchs dating back to 2010.

The GSU freshmen duo of Ismael Lahlou and Sofiane Chevallier kicked off the afternoon with a doubles victory at the No. 2 slot. The pair, playing together for the first time, notched their 8-6 win over ODU's Alfredo Rodriguez and Can Cetinel.

After sophomore Thomas Cook and senior Juan Pablo Gutierrez dropped a 8-4 match at No. 2 doubles, the doubles point came down to the No. 1 doubles matchup. Junior Victor Valente and freshman Matias Hatem rallied from an early deficit to take a 8-4 victory against ODU's Krzysztof Musalewski to secure the doubles point for the Panthers.

Georgia State continued its hot singles play as Valente and Cook both notched straight-set victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 slots respectively. Valente dispatched Musalewski 6-4, 6-4, while Cook defeated the Monarchs' Albert Ochagavia 6-4, 6-3.

Lahlou secured the Panthers' victory with a 6-2, 6-3, decision over Rodriguez at No. 4 singles. Hatem then followed with a gritty 6-4, 7-6(3) win after he rallied from down two games in the second set. Senior Juan Pablo Gutierrez grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles against Wesley Barrett of Old Dominion (0-1).

"This is a big win for us and I was impressed with our play and effort today," head coach Chase Hodges said, "To be 2-0 on the season is huge for us."

Georgia State next travels to Columbia, S.C., for matches on back-to-back days starting with Elon on Saturday (10 a.m.) and South Carolina on Sunday (10 a.m.).
