Darren McCray made his move and became the first player in GSU football history to return a kickoff return for a touchdown when he raced 96 yards to the end zone on the opening kickoff of GSU’s first road game in school history (at Campbell).
McCray made more nifty moves for GSU when he took a handoff and scooted 41 yards around end for a touchdown against Jacksonville State in the inaugural season.
The 5-7, 150-pounder was a member of GSU’s inaugural recruiting class. He netted 505 all-purpose yards in his 17 games with the Panthers.
The Columbus, Ga. native speedster netted 2,440 all-purpose yards as a senior at Spencer High and scored a remarkable 23 TD’s as a senior. McCray scored TD’s five different ways as a senior (rush, reception, pass interception, kick return and punt return).
