ATLANTA-With a late first half goal by Kwaku Adu and a late second half goal by Andrew Thompson, No. 3-seed Georgia State earned a 1-0 win over No. 6-seed Howard on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship at the GSU Soccer Complex.

Georgia State will advance to the semifinals on Friday to face No. 2-seed Georgia Southern at 6:30 p.m. in the second semifinal. In the first semifinal, No. 1 Coastal Carolina will face No. 4 Hartwick at 3 p.m. Hartwick earned a 2-1 win over Appalachian State in Thursday’s first quarterfinal. The winners will meet in the championship game with an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Georgia State improved to 13-7, winning for the sixth time in its last seven matches. With the loss, Howard fell to 2-15-3. The Panthers improved to 4-1 all-time against the Bison.

The Panthers entered the championship ranked No. 6 in the country in goals scored. The shutout was the team’s sixth of the season and fifth in the last six matches.

Georgia State nearly got on the board in the 14th minute as Oliver Haines put a shot on target that was deflected by Howard’s goalie Kenneth Hersey. Hannes Burmeister rebound shot went just wide keeping the score 0-0.

With just under three minutes to play in the first half, Adu scored a goal from just in front of the net off a pass from Rashid Alarape. It was his second goal of the season and sent the Panthers into the half leading 1-0.

As the second half came to a close, Andrew Thompson scored his first goal of the season in the 89th minute to lock up the win.

Georgia State finished with nine shots on goal, while holding Howard to just one.

"We're definitely excited to advance to the semifinals," head coach Brett Surrency said. "We knew we would get everything we could handle from Howard and they certainly lived up to our expectations. It doesn't matter how it gets done as long as it gets done, as long as we survive and advance. We're excited to be able to play Georgia Southern again tomorrow."
