KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Georgia State men’s soccer junior defender Kyle Clinton was named to the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List on Thursday, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club.
Clinton, a junior from Havant, England, was one of 32 NCAA Division I men’s players to make the list. In 2017, he helped lead the Panthers’ back line to seven shutouts and allow only 21 goals – both ranking atop the Sun Belt Conference. Clinton also finished tied for 10th in the conference in total goals with three.
He captured 2017 NSCAA All-Southeast Region First Team honors, was the 2017 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year and garnered his second consecutive All-Sun Belt First Team award. This season, Clinton aims to help GSU earn another trip to the conference championship, as the Panthers bring back 16 players from last year’s squad.
The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year’s winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Fifteen semifinalists will be named for the MAC Hermann Trophy near the end of the college season based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches and from those candidates, three finalists will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the coveted award.
Georgia State kicks off the year with its first of three exhibitions at 7 p.m. Saturday vs. Truett-McConnell at the GSU Soccer Complex. The Panthers then hosts North Florida on Aug. 14 before traveling to Jekyll Island, Ga. for three days of training and their final exhibition against Jacksonville on Aug. 18. GSU begins the regular season at Central Arkansas on Aug. 24.
