ATLANTA – Georgia State junior defender Alex Summerfield was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Summerfield netted the only goal in GSU’s 1-0 victory over in-state rival Mercer Saturday night, extending the Panthers’ win streak to six games – a feat the program accomplished for the first time in over 30 years.

The Billingshurt, England, native also helped Georgia State pitch two consecutive shutouts and became the first Panther to score goals in back-to-back matches since Hannes Burmeister in 2017. Summerfield’s goal against Mercer was his second of the season, tying him for the most goals on the team this year.

Georgia State has captured Defensive Player of the Week honors for three straight weeks and has had four different players earn the conference’s weekly award, the most among any other team in the Sun Belt. Summerfield joined George Proctor and Paul Tyson as defensive awards winners, while Lukas Joyner is GSU’s lone award-winner on the offensive side.

The Panthers aim to earn seven wins in a row for the first time since the 1984 season, as the team hosts Santa Clara 7 p.m. Saturday at the GSU Soccer Complex.
