ATLANTA – Georgia State men’s soccer senior midfielder Max Hemmings was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
In his final home match as a Panther, Hemmings netted two goals and dished an assist in GSU’s 4-3 Senior Day victory over defending Sun Belt champions Coastal Carolina, helping Georgia State beat the Chanticleers for the first time since 1981 and finish conference play undefeated for the first time since the 1989 season.
The Wokingham, England, native scored his first goal of the afternoon in the 21st minute when he connected with a free kick from George Proctor and later gave Georgia State a 2-0 lead after a strike from inside the box. He then had a hand in the team's third goal of the first half, dishing an assist to Tristan Jumeau whose goal gave the Panthers a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Hemmings' five points are the most in a single conference match among all Sun Belt players this season. He ranks tied for third in the league with three total assists and is tied for eighth with three goals.
Georgia State has collected a total of six Offensive/Defensive Player of the Week awards this year, leading all teams in the Sun Belt. Hemmings is the second Panther to earn Offensive Player of the Week this season, joining teammate Lukas Joyner who won the award on Sept. 11.
