ATLANTA – Georgia State men’s soccer gears up for its final match of the regular season, as the Panthers travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on UAB Friday night. GSU will aim to earn double-digits wins for the third straight season.
GSU (9-5-2, 2-0-2 Sun Belt) comes off a historic 4-3 Senior Day victory over defending conference champion Coastal Carolina on Sunday. The Panthers defeated the Chanticleers for the first time since 1981, scoring all four of its goals in the first half. Senior midfielder and reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Max Hemmings netted two goals and added an assist in the win, making his five total points the most in a single conference match this year.
Georgia State enters Friday ranked tied for second in the Sun Belt with 22 goals scored and 16 goals conceded. The Panthers finished conference play undefeated for the first time since 1989 and will be crowned regular season champions if Coastal Carolina beats Georgia Southern on Friday.
UAB (5-8-3, 2-5-1 C-USA) returns to the pitch after falling 1-0 to South Carolina on Saturday. The Blazers look to snap a two-game losing streak, being held without a goal in each of their last two contests. UAB has three different players with three goals scored this season, led by senior midfielder Deandre Robinson.
Friday will be the 20th meeting between the two programs, with GSU owning a 10-8-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Panthers won the most recent outing against UAB 4-1 during the 2017 season.
