SAVANNAH, Ga. – Georgia State men’s soccer knocked off two-time defending Sun Belt champion Coastal Carolina 2-1 Friday night in the SBC Tournament Semifinal round at Floyd E. Morris Field, earning a trip to the tournament finals for the fourth consecutive year.

The victory improved GSU to 10-6-2 overall, the third straight season Sun Belt Coach of the Year Brett Surrency has led the Panthers to double-digit wins. Coastal Carolina ended its season with a 10-6-0 mark.

Georgia State put itself ahead 1-0 just 13 minutes into Friday’s match, as a cross from George Proctor met Max Hemmings in the box, who headed in his fourth goal of the season. Coastal Carolina battled back, netting the equalizer off a penalty kick in the 38th minute to send the teams to the break knotted at one.

After finishing the first 45 minutes with only two shot attempts, GSU found a rhythm and controlled possession in the early going of the second half. The Panthers more than tripled their shot-count from the first, eventually notching the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. A shot from Tristan Jumeau was blocked by the keeper, then corralled and booted into the back of the net by Frank Rosenwald to give GSU a 2-1 advantage.

Coastal Carolina made a late push in the final 10 minutes but was unable to scratch across a second equalizer. Georgia State’s Paul Tyson ended the night with four total saves, facing 14 total shots from the Chanticleers.

After entering the season without a win against Coastal Carolina since 1981, the Panthers finished 2018 with a two-game sweep over the Chanticleers.
