ATLANTA – Georgia State men’s soccer standout and two-time Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Clinton has been named to the College Soccer News 2019 Preseason All-America Third Team, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
Clinton, who enters his senior season with the Panthers this fall, returns after a successful 2018 season where he helped lead GSU to a Sun Belt Conference Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. He collected the league’s Defensive POY honor for the second year in a row, earned All-Sun Belt First Team honors for the third consecutive year, garnered MAC Hermann Watch List honors and was named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team.
The Havant, England, native led GSU with over 1,800 minutes played and anchored a Georgia State back line that conceded only 25 goals in 20 matches and pitched five shutouts, the second-most in the league last year. He has racked up a career 49 starts in 54 appearances for the blue and white and has accumulated over 4,500 minutes on the pitch through three seasons.
Clinton was one of only two players from the Sun Belt to be named to the College Soccer News 2019 Preseason All-America list, joining senior forward Niklas Brodacki of Central Arkansas. He was also one of three players hailing from England to make the list, along with Michigan’s Jack Hallahan and Stanford’s Andrew Thomas.
GSU begins the 2019 season with a three-match exhibition slate, opening with a contest at Clayton State on Aug. 17. The Panthers then return home to host Montevallo on Aug. 20 before rounding out the preseason on Aug. 23 at Jacksonville. Georgia State commences the regular season on Aug. 29 with a road match against Presbyterian.
