What you need to know:

* Georgia State competed in the 2016 Sun Belt Championships Saturday morning in Dothan, Ala.

* The Panthers finished fourth in the 5K after being picked fifth in the preseason.

* Freshman Angela Alonso was named to the All-Sun Belt team after finishing ninth.

DOTHAN, Ala. - For the second year in a row, Georgia State’s cross country team had a runner finish in the top-10 in the conference championship as freshman Angela Alonso earned All-Sun Belt honors with a ninth place finish Saturday morning at the 2016 Sun Belt Championships.

Alonso was GSU’s top finished in the 5K with a time of 18:27. The Panthers finished fourth overall after being picked to finish fifth in the preseason.

“We battled to a good finish today,” head coach Chris England said. “We improved all season long and that's what you want to see. Angela Alonso competed with the best in the Sun Belt today and she has a bright future here at Georgia State.”

GSU earned a team score of 112 to best fifth place UT Arlington by 29 points. The Panthers also secured another point in the rivalry series with Georgia Southern as the Eagles came in seventh with 181 points.

Sammi Donovan finished 16th for the Panthers and Jordan Townsley came in 21st to give GSU three top-25 finishers.
