ATLANTA - The Georgia State Panthers pulled off an incredible feat by winning the Sun Belt Championship with only four available players. Those four have been named GSU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Kristin Rehse, Damira Muminović, Daniela Ramirez, and Lara Vovk overcame tremendous adversity to defeat both Appalachian State and ULM 4-3 in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds respectively. On Sunday's championship match Rehse won in three sets, clinching a 4-2 victory over South Alabama and the team's second Sun Belt title in the last three seasons.
GSU's Fearsome Foursome was able to take home the trophy, despite playing with the minimum number of allowed athletes and beginning every match down 2-0 due to walkover defeats in the fifth and sixth singles flights.
The Sun Belt trophy was not the only hardware the Panthers acquired over the course of last week. On Tuesday afternoon the Sun Belt announced Kristin Rehse to be named Sun Belt Player of the Year. Rehse was 18-7 in the number one flight for GSU and was also named to the All-Sun Belt singles team.
Joining Rehse on the All-Sun Belt team was Damira Muminović who went 3-0 over the weekend in singles play. Muminović will enter NCAA Tournament play with a 16-7 record and winner of eight of her last nine matches.
The Panthers will await the NCAA Selection Show in May to find out where they will continue their season.
