ATHENS, GA- Georgia State women’s tennis began play in the ITA Regionals Friday in Athens, Georgia. Senior Kristin Rehse won both of her singles matches to advance to tomorrow’s round of 16. Rehse and teammate Lara Vovk teamed up to win their opening round doubles match and will look to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Arina Taluyenko and Daniela Ramirez have withdrawn from the tournament due to injuries.
“Unfortunately today was not the day that we had hoped for”, said Panther coach Jason Marshall. “We need to do a better job in many areas such as closing out matches and having more mental toughness. We are looking forward tomorrow to another day of competing and hope we will continue to get better.”
The day began with the doubles main draw. In the round of 32 Lara Vovk and Kristin Rehse defeated a pair from Florida A&M 8-4 to advance to the round of 16. The pairings of Danilova/Ramirez and Taulyenko/ Muminović both fell to teams from Florida State 8-4.
“In doubles we need to get our fundamental skills better” said Marshall. Although we are playing with different combinations the skills in strategy need to transfer over with different partners.”
In the singles portion of the day, senior Kristin Rehse defeated 12th ranked Morgan Coppoc of UGA (0-6, 6-4, 6-1). Rehse then defeated Miami’s Sara Culbertson (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the round of 16. Kristin will face fourth seeded Paige Hourigan from Georgia Tech tomorrow, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
“Kristen competed very well today in both matches”, said Marshall. “She finds ways in matches to throw her opponent off her game, and she sets a great example for the rest of the girls on the team.”
Daniela Ramirez lost to FAU’s Natalia Boltinskaya in a heartbreaking third set tiebreaker (6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5)). Arina Taulyenko and Damira Muminović each fell to athletes from USF.
