ATLANTA, Ga.- Georgia State women’s tennis head coach Alex Leatu announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent Wednesday morning. Angel Carney and Denisa Gheorghe will join the Panthers prior to the Fall 2019 season.


Born in the Philippines, Angel Carney grew up in Dallas, Georgia before attending Laurel Springs Academy in Ojai, California for high school. Carney has competed in UTSA National and Southern Tournaments since the age of eight. She joined Universal Tennis Academy in Atlanta and was named Georgia Junior Player of the Year in 2013 and Hardie Family Junior Sportsmanship Award Winner in 2017. Carney was on the Honor Roll in her final three years at Laurel Springs Academy.


Denisa Gheorghe hails from Constanta, Romania and competed at Nicolae Rotaru. Gheorghe has qualified for and played in many top tournaments in Romania and throughout Europe. She intends to double major in sport administration and interior design when she enrolls at GSU. The Constanta native will join Eva Chivu and Andreea Stanescu as the third Romanian born player on Georgia State’s roster.


The duo, along with current freshmen Chivu, Stanescu, and Arielle Nealy will make up a young core on the 2020 team. The Panthers will begin the Spring 2019 season on January 19 at Florida Gulf Coast. Georgia State will be looking for the team’s third Sun Belt Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.
