*The Panthers defeated Cornell 5-2 Saturday morning thanks to singles wins from Daniela Ramirez, Eva Chivu, Damira Muminović, and Andreea Stanescu.
*The win evened Georgia State’s record to 1-1 on the season.
*GSU will take on the Furman Paladins on Monday at 2:00 p.m.


Fort Myers, Fla.- The Georgia State women’s tennis team took home their first victory of the year 5-2 over Cornell Saturday morning in Fort Myers behind a strong effort from a pair of freshmen. Eva Chivu and Andreea Stanescu each notched their first collegiate singles wins in the one and four position respectively.

The Panthers got out to a hot start as Stanescu and partner Daniela Ramirez took their doubles match 6-3 on court one. Chivu and Damira Muminović won 6-1 on court two to give GSU a 1-0 lead heading to singles play.

Chivu would dominate on court one 6-1, 6-1 while Muminović would win in a third set tiebreak 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) 10-3. Ramirez picked up her second win of the year with a quick 6-2, 6-1 singles victory, nad Stanescu battled to a 7-5, 6-4 win.

The victory was the first as a Division I head coach for Alex Leatu. Leatu served as an assistant coach on last year’s NCAA Tournament team.

Georgia State will have Sunday off before matching up with Furman Monday afternoon to wrap up the holiday weekend. The Panthers and Paladins will faceoff at 2:00 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Greenville, S.C.
