ATLANTA- Three Georgia State women’s tennis players, headlined by Eva Chivu, received Sun Belt awards as announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon. Chivu was elected conference Freshman of the Year and named Sun Belt First-Team Singles. Joining Chivu on the singles First-Team is senior Daniela Ramirez. Junior Damira Muminović was awarded Second-Team singles honors for the second straight season.
Chivu is 11-6 in spring dual play at the number one flight for the Panthers and has an 8-1 mark against Sun Belt opposition. The freshman has won seven straight matches against conference foes and eight of her last nine matches overall. The Romanian defeated the No. 47 ranked Andie Daniell of Alabama in February on the way to being named Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference.
Also earning First-Team honors is senior Daniela Ramirez who leads State with a 13-5 mark primarily playing in the number two singles flight. Ramirez is 5-2 in Sun Belt action this season and enters the conference tournament having won nine of her past 11 matches. Daniela owns wins over opposition from Mississippi State, Alabama, and Denver in non-conference play. The Venezuelan had win streaks of five and four respectively throughout the season.
For the second straight season, Damira Muminović has been given Second-Team All-Conference honors. The junior is 13-6 on the season with most of her action coming in the number three singles flight. Muminović has been impressive in conference play with an 8-1 record and enters this weekend a winner of 11 out of her last 12 matches. Muminović currently holds a four-match win streak, and won seven straight during an undefeated month of March.
Chivu, Ramirez, Muminović, and the rest of the Panthers will look to win their fourth conference title in six seasons as the Sun Belt Tournament begins Thursday in Peachtree City. The sixth seeded Panthers will face the three seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at 10:00 a.m.
