What you need to know:

Georgia State volleyball (9-14, 5-7) travels to Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina this weekend. After dropping three of their last four, the Panthers will look to get back on track in Sun Belt conference play starting Friday night.

* GSU meets App State Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Boone, N.C. before traveling to Conway, S.C. to take on Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday. Head coach Sally Polhamus and the Panthers are looking for their second and third road wins of the season.

* The Panthers currently hold third place in the East Division of the SBC behind Coastal Carolina and South Alabama. Senior Kristina Stinson leads GSU in total kills with 209 on the season. Senior Eliza Zachary and sophomore Crystal Lee each average nearly 2.5 kills per set. Sophomore Sarah Renner and freshman Celeste Friesen have totaled 760 assists and 324 digs, respectively.


ATLANTA – Georgia State court volleyball is back in action this weekend with matches against Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina. The Panthers will meet the Mountaineers at 6:30 p.m. Friday and the Chanticleers Sunday at 1 p.m.

Head coach Sally Polhamus and the Panthers fell to 5-7 in the Sun Belt last weekend with losses to Little Rock and Arkansas State. The team will look to bounce back as it fights for a spot in the conference tournament.

Outside hitters Kristina Stinson and Crystal Lee have led the Panther attack in SBC play with 242 combined kills. Senior middle blocker Eliza Zachary has matched them step-for-step and averages 2.32 kills per set.

Sophomore setter Sarah Renner has dished out almost 90 percent of the team’s assists in conference play with 419. Freshman libero Celeste Friesen and sophomore outside hitter Anna Rantala have stood out defensively with nearly four and 2.5 digs per set, respectively. Rantala also leads the Panthers in aces with 19 in conference play and 29 on the season.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-21, 1-10) earned their first SBC win of the season under head coach Matt Ginipro a couple weeks ago versus UL Monroe. After starting the season 2-1, the Mountaineers have mustered just one win in their last 21 matches. The Panthers picked up their seventh win of the season over App State in five sets on Oct. 8th.

Outside hitter Emma Longley has had a stellar freshman season with 337 total kills. Setters Amanda Krahl and Ashlyn Brown orchestrated the offense, each averaging close to eight assists per set. Freshman libero Kennedy Wilson leads App State with 270 digs on the year.

Head coach Jozsef Forman has guided Coastal Carolina (19-4, 10-1) to a fine season. The Chanticleers have won nine consecutive matches including a victory over Georgia State back on Oct. 7th.

Junior outside hitter and Clarkston, Ga. native Leah Hardeman spearheads the Chanticleer attack with 285 total kills. Sophomore setter Sara Boothe is averaging nearly 6.5 assists per set and senior middle blocker Annayka Legros has a team-high 24 blocks this season.

The Panthers will look to improve to a winning record (6-5) versus App State and earn their fourth all-time win over the Chanticleers.
