ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball’s Celeste Friesen has been named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday. Friesen recorded 71 digs in two matches over the weekend, averaging 7.10 digs per set.

The sophomore from Marietta tallied a game-high 35 digs in the Panthers’ five-set victory over Appalachian State on Friday night. The libero added 11 assists and four aces in the win. Friesen followed up her big Friday with a 36-dig effort in a five-set loss at Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

“Celeste’s play continues to grow and develop”, said Panther head coach Sally Polhamus. “She is working hard to become the player she is capable of being. This weekend she left everything she had on the court.”

Friesen leads all Sun Belt players with 384 digs and 5.19 digs per set. The libero’s numbers are even better against conference opponents, averaging 5.93 digs per set in Sun Belt play. As a team, Georgia State is third in the conference averaging 16.59 digs per set.

“It’s a great honor to be named Defensive Player of the Week”, said Friesen. “Being able to play as hard as I can for my teammates is the best feeling, and receiving an award in the end is like the cherry on top. I wouldn’t have this success without my teammates by my side.”

This is Friesen’s second time earning Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. She was given the honor on September 25th after racking up 53 digs in only eight sets the previous weekend. Her 45-dig performance at the GSU Invitational earned her Georgia State Student Athlete of the Week honors on September 18th.

The Panthers are back at home this weekend for a pair of Sun Belt matches. Georgia State takes on Troy Friday and hosts South Alabama Saturday night. Both matches are at the GSU Sports arena and are set for a 6:00 p.m. start.
