“It was a great first match for us in that we were able to get so many different players involved”, said coach Sally Polhamus. “A lot of players stepped up offensively and defensively, giving us a balanced attack and making us difficult to defend.”
Carley Eiken produced 16 assists and eight digs in just two sets of work, while sophomore Kinkaid Padgett would lead all Panthers with 11 digs. Lauren Bandera and Crystal Lee would pitch in 10 digs each as GSU put up 56 digs in three sets. Meisheia Griffin was a force at the net with five blocks and four kills.
The teams played tight early in the first set before a 4-0 lead from GSU would give the Panthers a 14-9 lead. Later, Georgia State would add a 5-1 run to push the lead to seven. The Delta Devils would answer with a late 5-0 push to narrow the margin to 23-19 before the Panthers notched a 25-19 first set win.
In the second frame, GSU trailed early but a 7-1 scoring swing would give the Panthers the lead and control of the set. State would cruise to a 25-15 decision in the set two propelled by nine assists and five digs from Eiken.
Georgia State would take advantage of a .289 hitting percentage in the third set to clinch the frame 25-17, and take the match. In the third, Sarah Renner dished out an incredible 14 assists, while Madelyn Ott recorded three kills and a block.
