ATLANTA, Ga.- Georgia State hits the road this weekend for a pair of matches in the Carolinas. The Panthers will take on Appalachian State at 6:30 pm Friday night before traveling to Conway for a 12:30 pm matinee match on Sunday.
GSU, fresh off a 3-2 win over Little Rock on Saturday night will have a tough task ahead as the Mountaineers and Chanticleers are two of the hottest teams in Sun Belt play. Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina have won four and three straight matches respectively.
The Panthers will be looking for revenge, as they are 0-2 against the Sun Belt’s Carolinas schools this season. GSU fell 3-0 to Coastal Carolina on October 9, and came up just short in a 3-2 decision on September 22 to Appalachian State. Crystal Lee recorded a season high 19 kills in the match against the Mountaineers, and Sarah Renner added a season high 50 assists.
Georgia State has a history of success in Boone, defeating Appalachian State on their home court 3-2 in each of the past two seasons. The Panthers took 2017 Sun Belt Champion Coastal Carolina to the brink in a 3-2 loss in Conway last October.
This weekend’s matches have the potential to see a couple of Panthers reach season and career milestones. Renner’s 2,381 career assists are just 15 shy of fifth place in GSU history. Meisheia Griffin is just one block away from the 100 mark on the season. Sydney Stroud is just nine kills shy of the 200 mark, and Lee is six digs away from becoming the first Panther to reach the 200 kill and 200 dig mark this season.
Live stats for both of this weekend’s matches will be available via the links on our schedule page. Friday’s match will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and Sunday’s match will have live video provided by the Chanticleer Sports Network.
