BIRMINGHAM- Georgia State volleyball fell just short in their last match of the UAB Blazer Invitational, dropping a five-setter 3-2 to ETSU. Saturday’s loss dropped the Panthers to 3-6 on the season.
The Panthers took the first point in the opening frame and never relinquished the lead. Morgan Hash, Julianna Truscott, and Sydney Stroud dominated the net. The trio accumulated a combined 15 kills en route to the 25-21 win. In addition to aggressive offense, the defense held the Buccaneers to a .085 hitting percentage.
In the second an early 4-0 scoring run gave the Panthers the advantage, but ETSU responded with their own pair of 4-0 runs to separate themselves in the frame. Despite late kills by veterans Stroud and Hash, the Buccaneers finished the set with the 25-22 victory.
Georgia State dropped the third set 25-23. Both offenses committed countless errors at the net. The Panthers hit a .000 as a team, but the Buccaneers only hit a .05. ETSU held on to take the frame.
Leah Wilcox reignited the Georgia State offense in the fourth. The Santa Fe College transfer recorded seven kills. Kampbell Hehr dished out 19 assists and added five digs of her own to secure the 25-21 victory.
Georgia State battled until the end, but ETSU would pull away with the 15-12 fifth set victory.
Lauren Bandera, Ryan Spicer-Gordon, and Kampbell Hehr each finished the match with double-digit digs. Meisheia Griffin and Sydney Stroud notched double-digit kills. Griffin’s 12 kills were a season high for the junior. In addition, Hehr’s 46 assists were a career high.
Next up the Panthers return to the GSU Sports Arena to finish non-conference action. Georgia State will host Northwestern State Friday evening before facing Brown Sunday at noon. Admission is free to both matches.
