Daytona Beach, Fla.-Trey Hampton recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Georgia State set a school record for fewest points allowed as the Panthers defeated Howard, 57-33, in the Glenn Wilkes Classic Saturday morning at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Joe Dukes added 10 points and five rebounds, and Jihad Ali contributed nine points and six boards for the Panthers (2-2), who conclude the Glenn Wilkes Classic by facing IUPUI Sunday at 1:15 p.m.

"We defended as well as we have in any game since I've been at Georgia State," said Panthers' head coach Rod Barnes. "It's exciting to play that kind of defense.

"Offensively, we executed better and got the ball inside, but we missed a lot of easy shots. With all the layups we had, we should have been able to shoot 50 percent. But I'm happy with the win, and very happy with the effort and energy on the defensive end. If we continue to defend like that, the offense will take care of itself."

Georgia State limited Howard (0-4) to just 11 field goals and 25.6 percent shooting from the field while outrebounding the Bison, 44-27. The previous scoring low for a GSU opponent was 40 points by Jacksonville State on Feb. 11, 1999. The Panthers' 24-point margin of victory is the second-best mark in GSU annals.

Playing a game that tipped off at 11 a.m., both teams started slowly on offense as the Panthers led 20-13 at the half. Howard managed just five field goals on 23 attempts. The Panthers were off the mark as well, hitting just 9-for-27 from the field in the first half before improving to 14-for-33 after the intermission.

Hampton, a senior from Hoover, Ala., came off the bench to notch his second career double-double in just 24 minutes. His 12 rebounds are a career best, with eight of them coming on the offensive end.

"Hamp showed a lot of energy, and that's what we need from him," said Barnes.

With a third straight game looming Sunday, no Panther played more than 30 minutes today.

"We've got to get some rest tonight and then come back Sunday with the same intensity," said Barnes.
