ATLANTA – Georgia State head coach Ron Hunter announced the signing of Downers Grove (Ill.) South High School star Denis Alibegovic to a National Letter of Intent on Monday.
The 6-4, 170 lbs., guard, who is originally from Bosnia Herzegovina, averaged 17.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists as a senior last year, while earning all-conference and DuPage County All-Area Team honors. Alibegovic knocked down 92 3-pointers during his final year of high school to set a school record.
He led his conference in scoring while shooting 40 percent from the floor and 42 percent from 3-point range. Alibegovic led Downers Grove South to an 18-10 mark and 9-3 conference mark in his final year.
“We are extremely pleased to add a great shooter like Denis to our family,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “Denis has a very quick release and good form. We have been trying to find a pure shooter for two years and feel like Denis is our guy. We look forward to being able to start working with him in just over a month as we start to prepare for the 2017-18 season.”
Alibegovic was named the MySuburbanLife.com Athlete of the Week earlier this year after scoring 26 points and knocking down the game-winner against Morton High School. He played on the varsity squad for his final three years of high school.
He joins fellow high school stars Josh Linder of Kathleen, Ga., and Kane Williams of Douglasville, Ga., who signed with the Panthers in November. Last month, Basil Smotherman transferred to Georgia State from Purdue and will have one year of eligibility remaining next season.
Georgia State is expected to sign one more player in the coming weeks Hunter looks to replace four seniors following the season.
