What You Need to Know:
* Georgia State will play a 13-game non-conference schedule before opening Sun Belt play the final weekend of December.
* Highlighting the schedule is a trip to Las Vegas over Thanksgiving and a return trip to Ole Miss.
* The Panthers will play five teams, including the first three, which advanced to postseason play last year. Each of those five won 20 or more games during the 2016-17 season.
ATLANTA – Georgia State men’s basketball head coach Ron Hunter announced an exciting and challenging 13-game non-conference schedule on Friday. Among the highlights is an appearance in the MGM Grand Main Event in Las Vegas before Sun Belt play gets underway at the end of December.
Coming off a fourth-straight winning season, the Panthers will make trips to Rice on Nov. 14 and Ole Miss on Nov. 17 as part of the MGM Grand Main Event as the season gets underway. Georgia State will then travel to Las Vegas to face Eastern Washington on Nov. 20, and either Eastern Kentucky or Prairie View A&M on Nov. 22.
Those first three games will all be against opponents who won 22 or more games last year and advanced to postseason play. In total, the Panthers will face five teams that advanced to postseason play last year and won 20 or more games.
The season opens on Nov. 10 facing Carver Bible College at 7 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena. Once again this season, all home games will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
Following the trip to Las Vegas, the Panthers will return home to face Tulane on Nov. 26. The Panthers will close the month with a trip to Alabama A&M on Nov. 29.
December will open with a three-game home-stand starting with Liberty, which advanced to the CIT last year, on Dec. 4. The Panthers will then host Montana (Dec. 9) and Point (Dec. 12) before closing non-conference play on the road for three straight games.
That stretch will begin at Dayton on Dec. 16, followed by games at UMass (Dec. 20) and Chattanooga (Dec. 23). Dayton qualified for the NCAA tournament last year while winning 24 games.
“We have put together a challenging schedule that will get us ready for Sun Belt play late in December,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “We wanted to test this group early and I think this schedule allows for that.”
Sun Belt play opens on Dec. 29, as the Panthers travel south to face South Alabama.
