ATLANTA-Playing an 18-game league schedule, Georgia State announced its 2018-19 Sun Belt Conference schedule on Tuesday. The men and women’s programs will play a mirrored schedule during the upcoming season.
Head coach Ron Hunter’s squad will open the season Jan. 3, at UT Arlington in a rematch of the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game from last season. On the same night, new women’s basketball head coach Gene Hill’s squad will open the season against the Mavericks in the GSU Sports Arena.
Hunter’s squad is coming off a 24-win year, Sun Belt championship and second trip to the NCAA tournament in the last four seasons.
Hill, who previously served as an assistant coach at NC State for the last four years, will inherit a group hungry to make a splash in the Sun Belt after finishing 10th last season.
Games times of all games will be announced at a later date.
After the openers against UT Arlington, both programs will face Texas State on Jan. 5.
Men’s basketball will open the home portion of the schedule facing defending Sun Belt Conference regular-season champion Louisiana on Jan. 10, while the women open the road portion of the schedule in Lafayette, La. Each team will face UL Monroe two days later on Jan. 12.
The first of two match-ups with in-state rival Georgia Southern come on Feb. 2, as men’s basketball hosts the Eagles and the women’s basketball team makes the trip to Statesboro.
Both programs will close the season facing their in-state rival as women’s basketball hosts the Eagles on March 9 for Senior Day, and the men’s basketball team makes the trip to Statesboro that same afternoon.
Senior day for the men’s basketball team will be March 2 as the Panthers host Little Rock.
The Sun Belt Championship will return to New Orleans in March. The women’s tournament begins on March 11 with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, March 16, while the men open the championship on March 12 and end on Selection Sunday, March 17. Ten teams will qualify for the championship with the top two teams on each side earning a double-bye.
Season tickets for the upcoming season will go on sale in July.
