MONROE, La.- The Georgia State women’s soccer team earned its first Sun Belt win of the season with a 1-0 victory over UL Monroe Friday night. Freshman Kayla Ruiz scored the game-winner, her first career goal for Georgia State.

With the win, the Panthers are 3-6-1 (1-2 SBC) while the Warhawks fell to 0-10-1 (0-3 SBC).

Georgia State fired seven shots to open the match, putting four on target. The Panther defense held the Warhawks to three shots in the first half, with Brie Haynes making one save to keep the score tied 0-0 heading into halftime.

GSU took five more in the second half with two on goal. Ruiz was able to net the ball at the 76-minute mark off a rebound, putting the game away for the Georgia State in its first conference win of the season.

The Panthers outshot UL Monroe 12-8, with Brooke Shank, Meagan Postell, and Alex Addington leading the team with two shots each.

“Today was a good overall performance by the girls,” head coach Ed Joyce said. “They bought in and battled to the end to get the points on the road. We are thrilled for Kayla Ruiz to get the first goal of her career tonight.”

The Panthers will return to the field Sunday afternoon to face South Alabama in Mobile, Ala. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., and live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
