ATLANTA – Georgia State women’s soccer rounds out its two-game home stretch with a matchup vs. Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. The Panthers look to build on Friday’s 3-2 double overtime victory vs. Mercer and finish the week 2-0.
GSU (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the season when senior forward Caitlin Ray netted the game-winning goal in the 108th minute of Friday’s match. The Panthers built a 2-0 lead behind two goals from Brooke Shank, but Mercer responded with two goals late in the second half to force overtime. Georgia State keeper Madi Card, who finished the night with six saves, made two big saves in the closing seconds to keep the Bears from adding a third goal.
The Panthers held a Mercer offense that entered Friday’s contest ranked second in the nation in goals per game (6.0) and shots per game (31.5) to just two goals and 16 total shots. The GSU back line has had a strong showing through the first three matches and is currently tied for fourth in the Sun Belt in goals allowed per game (1.33).
Jacksonville State (2-1-0) took its first loss of the season after falling to Georgia Southern 1-0 on Friday. The Gamecocks had a plus-six shot advantage over Georgia Southern, but were unable to notch the equalizer. JSU will provide another test for the GSU defense, as the Gamecocks entered the weekend ranked tied for fifth nationally in goals per game (4.5).
Georgia State will face Jacksonville State for the 22nd time in series history, with the Panthers holding a 14-1-6 advantage. In the most recent outing between the two programs, GSU and JSU drew 0-0 in 2OT during the 2017 season.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at the GSU Soccer Complex. Live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
