ATLANTA – Madi Card of Georgia State women’s soccer was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Card earned back-to-back shutouts against two of the league's top teams in Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina last week, helping the Panthers win four consecutive conference matches for the first time since 2003.
The Washington, D.C., native notched a season-high nine saves and shutout an App State team on Friday that entered the contest ranked third in the conference in goals scored and held the Mountaineers without a goal for just the second time in their last six matches.
On Sunday, Card blanked a Chanticleers club that gone nearly two weeks without being shutout. She faced 14 total shots in both matches and improved her record to 5-2 in goal.
Card ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in both goals against average (1.11) and save percentage (.789). She became the second GSU player to earn one of the conference’s weekly awards this season, joining Brooke Shank who was named Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 28.
