ATLANTA – Making its first postseason appearance since 2015, Georgia State women’s soccer heads to Foley, Ala., this week where it will take on Coastal Carolina in the opening round of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
GSU (7-9-2, 5-4-1 Sun Belt) enters the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the league after ending the regular season on a 5-0-1 unbeaten streak. Georgia State has been dominant on both ends of the pitch, outscoring its opponents 14-5 during the streak. The team ranks tied for third with 14.7 shots per conference match and is tied for fifth with 14 total goals against league opponents.
Brooke Shank and Caitlin Ray each lead GSU with 11 total points this year, both tied for the eighth most in the conference. Shank leads the team with five goals scored, tied for fifth among all Sun Belt players this year, while Ray has tallied five assists on the season, tied for the fourth most in the league.
In its last outing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Georgia State made a magical run to the championship match as the six seed, pulling back-to-back upsets before falling to eventual champion South Alabama during the 2015 campaign. This year, GSU again plays as the six seed and aims to make another conference championship appearance, but this time come out on top.
Coastal Carolina (8-7-1, 7-3-0 Sun Belt) will be the No. 3 seed and returns to the pitch after a 2-1 overtime victory over Arkansas State in its regular season finale. The Chanticleers are averaging 16.4 shots per conference match, the second highest mark in the league, and rank tied for fourth with 10 goals conceded in league play. CCU is led by junior midfielder Hannah Miller, who has four goals and an assist this year.
The two teams will square off for the second time this season, as the Panthers earned a 4-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Oct. 14. It was the first time since 2003 GSU had won four straight conference matches and snapped the Chanticleers’ streak of three straight shutout victories. Senior Monique Hundley led GSU with a career-high two goals in the victory.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET Wednesday at the Foley Sports Complex. All matches of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be broadcasted live on ESPN+ and live stats are available at SunBeltSports.org.
