FOLEY, Ala. – Georgia State women’s soccer used a late rally to battle back and earn a 3-2 overtime victory over three-seed Coastal Carolina Wednesday night in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex, getting the game-winning goal from Brooke Shank in the 94th minute.
The victory extended the Panthers’ unbeaten streak to seven games, improving the team’s overall record to 8-9-2. Coastal Carolina concluded its season with an 8-8-1 mark. GSU advances to the semifinals, where it will face No. 2 Little Rock on Friday.
The Panthers found the back of the net just five minutes into Wednesday’s contest, as Caitlin Ray dished a pass to Lily Barron who netted her third goal of the season to put her team ahead 1-0. Coastal Carolina responded three minutes later, tying the match at one after a strong strike from outside the 18-yard box.
CCU later took a 2-1 lead after Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year Hannah Miller netted a goal from the right corner of the box. GSU continued to fight, getting a few good looks before breaking through in the final 10 minutes.
A scramble in the box led to a shot from Alex Addington that was deflected to the feet of Ray, who knocked in the equalizer in the 82nd minute. The goal was Ray’s fourth of the season.
Georgia State carried its momentum from the late goal into overtime, as the Panthers stayed in attack mode and punched their ticket to the semifinals in the 94th minute when a cross from Monique Hundley met Shank in the box who headed in her sixth goal of the year.
GSU ended the night with an 18-9 advantage in total shots, a 7-4 advantage in shots on target and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Shank led the team with four total shots, while Addington, Hundley and Ray each had three.
