ATLANTA – Jocelyn Jones netted two goals late in the second half to put the final touches on Georgia State’s 5-0 shutout over Alabama A&M Saturday night at the GSU Soccer Complex, giving the Panthers back-to-back victories after starting out the year 0-2.
GSU’s five goals were the most in a single match since 2015 and the most ever in a single contest under head coach Ed Joyce. The Panthers finished the night outshooting their opponent 23-3, including a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal.
"After dropping our first two games we are really proud of the girls bouncing back with two wins," Joyce said. "I'm really happy to see all of Jocelyn's hard work paying off and for her to get those two goals tonight."
True freshman Jimena Cabrero got the evening started for the blue and white as she knocked in a pass from Jolie Ryff for her first career goal in the fourth minute of Thursday’s contest. Ryff stayed in on the action and belted her first career goal just six minutes later. Hannah Davis picked up the assist on GSU’s second goal, her second of the season.
Georgia State continued to press the attack and control the possession in the first half, again finding the back of the net in the 30th minute when Brisa Zavala put one through to give her team a 3-0 lead. The Panthers headed to the break with a 9-3 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in shots on target.
Alabama A&M struggled to generate any offense in the second half, finishing the final 45 minutes without a single shot attempt. Meanwhile, GSU added to its lead as Jones scored twice within a 13-minute window, earning her first career multi-goal performance. The Brandon, Miss., native ended with four total shots and three shots on goal, also career highs.
Kendra Clarke picked up her second win in goal on Saturday, finishing with three saves and her first shutout.
"Today was a really good team performance," Joyce said. "We are really pleased that we kept that we kept a clean sheet and couldn't be happier for Jolie and Jimena to score the first regular season goals of their career."
Georgia State is back in action 7 p.m. Friday to take on Chattanooga at the GSU Soccer Complex.
