TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Georgia State’s softball team split a pair of contests Friday at the Easton Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. GSU defeated North Iowa before falling to 10th-ranked Alabama.
Game 1: Georgia State 3, Northern Iowa 1
In a matchup of Panthers mascots, GSU and UNI were locked in a tight game too open the weekend.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Georgia State pushed three runs across to take the lead. Kirsten McMonigle singled to start the inning and Kristin Hawkins reached base on an error. Baylee Sexton then singled to load the bases and Reagan Morgan delivered the big hit with a two-run single to center field.
Ivie Drake brought home the third run with a sacrifice fly.
Emily Soles got the start in the circle and threw 4.0 innings, holding UNI to an unearned run on five hits. Soles picked up the win to move to 3-2 on the season.
Kinsley Jennings worked 3.0 scoreless frames to earn the save, allowing just one hit in her relief appearance.
Morgan and Drake each recorded multi-hit games with Morgan going 2-for-4 with two RBI and Drake going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Game 2: No. 10 Alabama 5, Georgia State 1
In the second game of the day, Georgia State faced the ranked Crimson Tide on Alabama’s home field.
Georgia State got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Taylor Chadwick was able to touch home plate thanks to a throwing error by Alabama’s catcher.
Alabama responded with a two-run home run in the home half of the inning to go in front 2-1.
The Crimson Tide added some insurance runs in the bottom of the third with three runs on four hits.
Georgia State out-hit Alabama 8-6, but the Panthers stranded seven runners on base.
