ATLANTA - Assistant Head Coach Todd Downes will be inducted into the 2018 Georgia Dugout Club Softball Hall of Fame class in January, the GADC announced on Dec. 5.
Downes will join former head coach Bob Heck as the second Panther to be inducted into the GADC Softball Hall of Fame.
"Congratulations to TD for being elected to the GADC Hall of Fame. It is a great honor for him to be recognized and well deserved," head coach Roger Kincaid said. "Todd has worn many hats in his career. He has been a teacher, administrator, coach, umpire and referee. He has truly done it all when it comes to education and sports."
Downes joined Kincaid's staff in the fall of 2011 and was promoted to assistant head coach before the 2015 season.
"On a personal note, I am extremely grateful to TD for all that he does for me every day. He helps me in ways big and small that will never show up on a stat sheet. He is willing to do whatever is needed to help us be successful. If it needs to be done, Todd will figure out a way," Kincaid noted. "I am so happy that Todd is being honored by the GADC. He has been coaching for a long time and it is very special for him to be a Hall of Famer."
Downes has done it all in the Georgia softball world. Spending, 15 years teaching and coaching in the Cobb County school system at both Walton and Kell High Schools, he won two state titles (Walton, 1998 and Kell, 2003) and totaled 248 wins in 10 seasons. He is a two-time Georgia Coach of the Year honoree and has coached his teams to eight region/area championships. During his time in the high school ranks he coached two NFCA All-Americans.
As an assistant coach at Georgia Tech (2006-2010) and at Georgia State (2011-pres.), Downes has three conference titles, four NCAA Tournament appearances, one super regional appearance, 425 wins through 11 seasons, and three conference Players of the Year.
Downes was an assistant for the USSSA Pride in 2015, helping the club to a regular season championship.
He won a national title (ASA Gold 18U) in 2010 as an assistant coach for the East Cobb Fastpitch Organization.
Downes is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and a former GACA State Chairman for softball.
"I had a call earlier this Fall from Lisa Chapman who is the head coach at Kennesaw Mountain High School and the Director of Softball for the Ga Dugout Club. I returned her call thinking she wanted to talk about a recruit," Downes recalled. "I was in total shock when she said I had been voted to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. It was something I had never thought about or expected and I feel quite honored to be recognized by this organization."
"I know they inducted Tony Wolfe from Buford last year and other greats like Scott Whitlock from Kennesaw State have been inducted in the past so to just be mentioned in that group is amazing," Downes said. "I also just saw that I am to be inducted with recently retired Frank Turner from Mill Creek and he has had a great career and done amazing things to help kids. I am humbled to be included in this group."
The induction for Downes will take place during the GADC Softball Clinic Jan. 11-12 at the Hilton Marietta Hotel and Conference Center.
