ATLANTA – Georgia State men’s golf coach Chad Wilson announced the signing of local junior golfers Will Chambless and Mac Thompson on Thursday to National Letters of Intent. Both highly ranked Georgia golfers will join the Panthers in the fall.
Chambless is currently ranked No. 8 in Georgia, while Thompson, from nearby Marietta, is among the top 10 in the 2018 SJGT Player of the Year standings.
“We are really excited about the addition of Mac and Will to our program,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “They are consistent with Georgia State’s clear priorities with a passion to perform well athletically and academically. I believe Will and Mac will not only benefit from our program, but the program itself will become a lot better with their arrival.”
Chambless, who currently plays for Stratford Academy, recently finished in second at the AJGA Scott Stallings Junior Championship and sixth at the AJGA The Memorial Junior. He has made the Class A Private School state tournament each of the last two years for Christian Heritage Academy.
He also earned a second place finish at the SJGT Brunswick Championship and eighth at the Carolinas-Georgia Junior Championship, to go along with a tie for 10th at the UGA Invitational presented by Autotrader.
“Will was one of the first players from the 2019 class that I spent a lot of time evaluating,” Wilson said. “He has a great desire to succeed and that desire led him to find a lot of success this summer. One of the many things I learned about Will this year was that his game can travel. He competed several times outside of Georgia and was able to showcase his progress with some great finishes. That was really important for me to see as we do play many of our tournaments away from this region. We personally feel that a lot of people overlooked this kid and can’t wait for him to prove us right.”
Thompson, who stars at Marietta High School, has had an impressive run on the Southeastern Junior Tour over the last few years. He recently won the SJGT UGA Junior Classic shooting 67-75.
He has been MVP of the Marietta High School golf team the last three years and won the 2018 Cobb County Championship shooting 67. He also won the 2018 Parkview Invitational shooting 72 and has been named the Marietta Daily Journal Athlete of the Week.
In 2017, he earned a fourth-place finish at the SJGT Achasta Junior, shooting a second round 65, and also earned a fifth-place finish at the SJGT Grand National Junior. In 2016, he won the SJGT Forest Hills Junior Classic shooting 74-71 and earned a second-place finish at the SJGT UGA Junior Classic with back-to-back rounds of 71.
“Mac’s improvement on the golf course was evident by winning the 2018 SJGT UGA Golf Course Junior Classic,” Wilson said. “He has always played a great schedule and that playing experience, along with being an individual champion, will help us immediately once he settles in. One important characteristic that we noticed with Mac were the amount of leadership qualities he owns. His strong academics, along with his work in the Marietta community, will serve us greatly. He comes from a great family and we are thrilled he’s a Panther.”
Following a busy fall season that concluded in October, Georgia State will return to the court for the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn Feb. 24-26.
