HARTFORD, Wisc. – Led by a second-straight 3-under par 69 from senior Ashton Poole, the Georgia State men’s golf team moved into eighth-place following the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate at historic Erin Hills Golf Club.

Poole, who has five-straight rounds in the 60’s to open the season, made six birdies to sit at 6-under par and just one stroke off the lead entering the final round. Only nine golfers are under par on the course that hosted the 2017 U.S. Open Championship.

The Panthers improved by 11 strokes from round one and now stand at 15-over par but could have doubled that margin of improvement. At one point on Monday, Georgia State had moved into a share for the lead and was 9-under par for the day, but stumbled coming in.

“We got off to a great start and put ourselves in a great position, but we couldn’t finish the round as strong,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “Our guys have shown that they can play some great golf on this course and we are still in contention going into the final round. We need to play a complete round and if we do, we should be able to give ourselves a shot.”

The Panthers are just 12 strokes off the lead with 18 holes to play.

Senior Josh Edgar followed an opening-round 74 with a 73 and sits at 3-over par and tied for 27th. After a tough opening round, senior Severin Soller rebounded with a 1-under 71 to move into 65th place at 13-over par.

Senior Egill Gunnarsson and sophomore David Li each shot 77 on Monday and are tied for 59th at 12-over par.

Purdue fired a 10-under par 278 to move into the team lead at 3-over par. First-round leader UCLA stands in second-place at 4-over par, with Indiana in third-place at 5-over par. Northwestern and UC Davis are tied for fourth place at 6-over par.

Marquette’s Hunter Eichhorn shot a 5-under 67 to take over the individual lead at 7-under par. Poole stands in second-place at 6-under par, with South Florida’s Luke Gifford in third-place at 4-under par. UC Davis’ Thomas Hutchison is in fourth-place at 3-under par, while Northwestern’s David Nyfjall rounds out the top five at 2-under par.
