AWENDAW, S.C. – Led by a 1-under 71 from sophomore Nick Budd, Georgia State shot a second round 5-over 293 to fall to fourth place at 6-under at The Hootie at Bulls Bay on Monday. Senior Nathan Mallonee continues to stand among the top five in a field that includes nine teams ranked in the top 50.
Budd made a pair of birdies and a bogey on Monday to move up to a tie for 35th with one round to play. Mallonee added a 1-over 73 and is 4-under and tied for fifth entering the final round.
Georgia State, currently ranked No. 69 in the latest GolfStat rankings, trails only three schools, all ranked in the top 50. Two-time defending champion No. 31 South Carolina and No. 25 Ole Miss are tied for the team lead at 11-under par. The Gamecocks shot 286 on Monday, while the Rebels shot 282. Just two strokes ahead of the Panthers at 8-under par is No. 49 NC State. Missouri and Kentucky round out the top five at 2-under par.
“We struggled a bit today, but overall, the scoring conditions were tougher,” head coach Joe Inman said. “The good thing is that we are still very much in contention to win this tournament which would be huge boost for us. I truly believe we will come out on Tuesday and play well.”
Junior Max Herrmann added a 1-over 73 on Monday and now stands at even par and tied for 22nd entering the final round. Twin brother Alex Herrmann shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 42nd at 2-over par with one round to play, while sophomore Nathan Williams is tied for 48th at 3-over following a 6-over 78.
Ole Miss teammates Braden Thornberry and Ben Wolcott share the individual lead as each are at 9-under par. South Carolina’s Keenan Huskey and Virginia’s Jimmy Stranger are tied for third at 3-under par, while Mallonee and Missouri’s Euan Walker are tied for fifth at 4-under.

The eighth annual event benefits The Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation which puts on the event. The coaches, players and sponsors enjoyed a Hootie and the Blowfish concert on Friday night.
Following the event, Georgia State will return to the course April 1-2 at the 3M Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga. It will mark the final regular season event before the Sun Belt Conference Championship later in the month in Destin, Fla.
