HUMBLE, Texas – The Georgia State men’s golf team opened the spring season with a 7-over 295 on Friday to stand in 16th following the first round of the All-American Intercollegiate hosted at the Golf Club of Houston.
Junior Severin Soller made four birdies en route to an even-par 72 to sit tied for 39th with 36 holes to play this weekend.
“We got off to a bit of a bumpy start to the spring on Friday,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “We made some birdies, but we also had way too many double bogeys and those are hard to overcome. The good news is that we have 36 holes to play and can still climb a lot of spots on the leaderboard.”
Sophomore Josh Edgar who is competing as an individual for the Panthers this week opened play with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 70th.
No. 10 Auburn and host Houston lead the 18-team field after each school shot an opening round 14-under 274. No. 48 Ole Miss is in third at 12-under par, with No. 3 Baylor in fourth at 9-under par. No. 30 South Carolina, South Alabama and North Texas are tied for fifth at 7-under par.
Auburn’s Brandon Mancheno, ranked No. 37 in the country, opened play with a 7-under 65 to lead by two strokes. Houston’s Papito Gonzalez, North Texas’ Thomas Rosenmueller, and Ole Miss’ Josh Seiple are tied for second at 5-under par. A group of six golfers
Live scoring of the entire tournament will be available at Golfstat.com. Georgia State will be paired with Cincinnati and Lamar on Saturday morning beginning at 10:50 a.m. ET and tee off Hole No. 10.
Following this week’s event, Georgia State will return to the course for the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn March 4-6 in Opelika, Ala.
