AWENDAW, S.C. – Led by a 3-under par 69 from junior Severin Soller, the Georgia State golf team opened The Hootie at Bulls Bay on Sunday with a 3-under par 285 to stand in sixth-place following the first round at Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Soller’s round included a second-nine 32 that left him in a tie for fourth with 36 holes to play in an event put on by the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation.

The Panthers are just four strokes out of second-place a year after finishing fifth in the same event along the coast last year.

“It was a real team effort for us today,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “We had a couple of little mistakes that we need to clean up, but overall I thought we played really well. Seve stepped up with an impressive round and I thought Josh did a really nice job as well. Nick got off to a tough start but battled back and never gave up all round.”

Sophomore Josh Edgar shot a 2-under par 70 and stands in a tie for 13th after the opening round that featured three birdies. Senior Max Herrmann also made three birdies and is tied for 21st at 1-under par. Juniors Nick Budd and Nathan Williams are tied for 51st after each shot 75 on Sunday.

Missouri shot an opening round 10-under 278 to grab a three-stroke lead on Sunday. Kentucky, Iowa State, Kent State and Ole Miss are each tied for second place at 7-under par.

Missouri’s Matt Echelmeier shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Iowa State’s Lachlan Barker and Braden Thornberry from Ole Miss are tied for second at 4-under par. A group of nine golfers, including Soller are tied for fourth at 3-under par.

The 54-hole event will continue on Monday with tee times off Holes No. 1 and 10 starting at 9 a.m. Georgia State will be paired with Kent State and Ole Miss in the opening wave off Hole No. 1.

Following the event, Georgia State will return to the course March 31-April 1 at the 3M Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga. It will mark the final regular-season event before the Sun Belt Conference Championship later in the month in Destin, Fla.
