ATLANTA- The No. 47 Georgia State men’s tennis team defeated South Alabama 4-1 in the team’s first conference match of the year. Sophomore Bailey Showers clinched the match, his first of the season.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 7-6 (1-0 SBC) while the Jaguars fell to 4-3 (0-1 SBC).

GSU opened play strong, clinching the doubles point at the bottom two positions. Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Duarte defeated Clement Marzol and Maxime Lapraille 6-1, while Giles Hussey and Jack MacFarlane earned a 6-3 victory over Lucas Gonzalez and Santiago di Loreto.

Georgia State picked up a singles point quickly, with Hussey defeating Gonzalez 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. South Alabama earned its lone point at the No. 2 position as Quentin Coulaud fell 6-3, 6-4.

Acuna put the Panthers within one of the clinch with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Olivier Gingras. Showers clinched the match at the No. 6 position, defeating di Loreto 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the tiebreaker set.

“It was good to get out there and get a win against a conference rival,” assistant coach Steve Forman said. “Today was a hard-fought match and it was nice to see Bailey step up and clinch the win. It was a full team effort, everyone who was able to play did, and it doesn’t get any better than that.”

The Panthers will return to the court next weekend, staying in Atlanta for two matches at home and one at Georgia Tech.
