ATLANTA- The No. 45 Georgia State men’s tennis team will stay in Atlanta for two matches this weekend, hosting ETSU and playing at Georgia Tech. The team was scheduled to host USC Upstate Friday afternoon, but the match was cancelled due to projected wind speeds.
The Panthers are 7-6 (1-0 SBC) on the season, entering the weekend with a three-match winning streak. GSU snapped a three-match losing streak in Jacksonville, Fla. in mid-February, defeating North Florida, Charlotte, and SBC rival South Alabama coming into March play.
Several players have stepped in the past few matches, with sophomore Bailey Showers earning his first match-clinching victory over South Alabama last weekend. Showers is now 2-1 in singles play this season.
Kevin Huynh has also had an impressive few weeks on the court, clinching matches against North Florida and Charlotte. The freshman has seven singles victories this spring, tying with Sebastian Acuna for most wins in singles play.
The team has been improving in doubles play, clinching the doubles point in three of its last five matches. Acuna and Andrei Duarte lead the team in doubles play, going 5-4 and winning their last two matches.
Georgia Tech is 3-7 heading into the weekend and will face Miami Friday before hosting the Panthers on Saturday. All three of the Yellow Jackets’ wins have come at home, with their last win coming over Auburn in January.
ETSU will enter the weekend with a 5-4 record, the only team the Panthers will face with a winning record. The Bucs will play at Samford Friday before heading to Atlanta, bringing their three-match win-streak to Birmingham.
Georgia State will host USC Upstate Friday at noon at Piedmont Park before heading up the road to face the Yellow Jackets Saturday at 2 p.m. The Panthers will close out the weekend by hosting ETSU at 11 a.m., with admission to both home matches free to fans.
