ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia State men’s tennis had a successful opening day in the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Georgia, as five different Panthers moved on to the Round of 16 in the Singles Qualifying Bracket on Friday.

Georgia State’s Andrei Duarte, Kevin Huynh, Jack MacFarlane, Diego Padilha and Bailey Showers all moved on to the Round of 16 after finishing Friday undefeated. Also competing for the Panthers on Friday was Patrick Lazo and Steven Huynh. Together, the seven Panthers combined to finish day one with an 8-2 record, including a 3-0 record against rival Georgia Southern.

Duarte, MacFarlane and Padilha all won their second-round matches after first-round byes. Duarte defeated Diego Finkelstein of Georgia Southern 6-2, 6-2, MacFarlane defeated Mrcelo Tebet of Florida Gulf Coast 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Padilha defeated Murphy McCullough of Georgia Southern 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Kevin Huynh and Showers each won back-to-back matches to reach the Round of 16. Huynh won his first match in two sets then knocked off Bryn Nahrung of Florida State 6-3, 7-5. Showers earned a three-set victory in round one then defeated Franco Aubone of Miami 6-2, 6-2.

Steven Huynh won his opening round match of the qualifying bracket before falling in the second round to Vasyl Kiselyov of UCF 4-6, 1-6. Lazo dropped his first match to Louis Gorregues of Stetson 6-3, 3-6, 3-6. Both Huynh and Lazo will compete tomorrow in the Qualifying Consolation bracket.

The tournament continues with singles play at 8:30 a.m. Saturday followed by the first two rounds of the Doubles Main Draw. GSU’s Quentin Coulaud, Roberts Grinvalds and Giles Hussey will all begin singles play in the Main Draw Saturday morning.
