ATLANTA -- Week 2 of spring football practice for the Georgia State Panthers concluded with a spirited scrimmage Friday morning at the GSU Practice Complex.
"We ran about 125 plays out there, and for the most part, it was good focus and good energy with not many miscommunications," head coach Shawn Elliott said. "They played with great effort and intensity, and we got a lot of great work done. Offensively, defensively and special teams-wise, it was a good opportunity to get out here and play."
Elliott, the Panthers' first-year head coach, liked what he saw from the GSU defense, particularly in the red zone. The Panthers return seven starters on defense, including standout defensive end Mackendy Cheridor and noseguard Julien Laurent.
"The defense really rose up," he said. "The offense moved the ball from the plus-10 to the minus-10, but down on the goal line, the defense stepped up their intensity, which was great to see. On the other hand, the offense can't leave the ball in the red zone. We've got to punch it in. That's a mindset that we've got to get better at, offensively, but the defense did a great job holding them out of the end zone."
The Panthers will be back on the field Monday morning. Spring drills continue through the April 15 Blue-White Spring Game, which will take place at 12 noon at Grady Stadium in Midtown Atlanta.
We've got to get better everywhere, but that what's the spring is about, to keep working and keep getting better and and keep find the players and playmakers, so that's what we're trying to do," Elliott said.
Georgia State football will play its first season in the new Georgia State Stadium in 2017, with the inaugural game scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31 vs. Tennessee State. Season tickets are on sale now, beginning at $100.
