ATLANTA – Coming off another record-setting year in the classroom, Georgia State earned additional hardware on Wednesday as four programs earned the Sun Belt Conference’s Team GPA Award.

Cross country, men’s soccer, volleyball, and women’s tennis were all honored by the league offices for having the best GPA of any team within their particular sport.

Seven other schools in the league were also honored on Wednesday, though Georgia State led the Sun Belt Conference with four teams as no one else had more than three.

Georgia State was led by cross country and women’s tennis which each had a 3.83 team GPA, while the Sun Belt champion men’s soccer team earned a 3.52 GPA and volleyball garnered a 3.63.

What The Coaches are Saying:

Chris England, Cross Country: “It never ceases to amaze me how competitive the GSU cross country team is on and off the playing field. In addition to competitive running accolades, their individual and collective team success in the classroom is consistently the highest in the GSU Athletic Department, among the Sun Belt Conference schools and even one of the highest in the NCAA.”

Brett Surrency, Men’s Soccer: “To think that last year’s group won the Sun Belt regular-season conference title, the tournament title and had the highest GPA in the conference is a pretty remarkable achievement. Just another example of how special the 2018-19 team was as they certainly raised the bar for our program.”

Alex Leatu, Women’s Tennis: "This group places a high premium on discipline and accountability. We have high standards and that doesn't change when these athletes step off the court. They are here to leave a legacy academically and athletically. They are proving that."

Sally Polhamus, Volleyball: "One of our standard expectations coming in as a Panther is knowing that you are going to push academically and athletically. This is something our team makes as a goal before the season starts. I am proud of our team for accomplishing such a high GPA. I look forward to building upon this."
