October 17, 2018

Dear Panther Family,

It’s really exciting to share this month’s State of the Panthers edition with you.

Hopefully, everyone saw the news last week that Georgia State student-athletes earned the Sun Belt Graduation Award for 2017-2018.  Every university coach, administrator, professor, counselor, etc., in America, promises to parents and kids during the recruiting process that we will help your son or daughter earn a college degree.  So, we are incredibly proud to earn this award because it demonstrates that at Georgia State, words are put into action.  Academic achievement is the first part of our Culture of Success.

Secondly, I am happy to announce that we accepted a qualified bid to begin construction on the second phase of the football operations center at Pete Petit Field at Georgia State Stadium.  Construction will begin later this month to add coaches’ offices, team meeting spaces, weight room, training room, and equipment space to the already completed locker room.  This will be completed by March 2019 and when done, it will be one of the top college football facilities in the country.  We will show renderings of the spaces in the coming weeks.

Third, Sun Belt Conference Championships are right around the corner. Cross country, which is fresh off an outstanding performance this weekend at the Little Rock Invitational, is first up in Mobile on October 27.  Next will be women’s soccer which begins play on Oct. 31, in Foley, Alabama. Currently, we are in the midst of a four-game conference winning streak, which has not been accomplished here since 2003, so please share in our excitement for Coach Joyce and his team.  The men’s soccer tournament starts November 7 about three hours south of Atlanta.  Coach Surrency’s team will be a top seed when play begins.  Finally, we host the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament on November 15-18.  We host our rivals on Wednesday, November 7 at 6:30 pm in a match that is crucial for determining tournament seeding.  We hope a large and loud contingent of the Panther Family will come to support us.

Fourth, homecoming is next week, highlighted by the football game against Coastal Carolina at 2 pm.  Please buy your tickets now and bring a couple other GSU alums and friends with you.

Finally, basketball season is right around the corner at the start of November. For all the students reading this, a special GSU Jam basketball event is a part of homecoming week on Tuesday night, October 23 at the University Commons courtyard. Everyone is invited, but we really wanted to bring this event to our students who can truly give us a loud home court advantage. We are excited about this new event to build campus energy for our basketball programs.  Please come out and watch.

Thanks for your support and…  Go Panthers!
